Pin weight is the share of a fifth wheel's weight that presses straight down on your truck — and it's the number that decides whether the combination actually works. Estimate it here from the trailer's weight, then check it against your truck's real door-sticker payload.

Short answer

A fifth wheel carries 15–25% of its loaded weight on the pin — plan at 20%. So a 12,000 lb trailer puts roughly 2,400 lb on the truck (range 1,800–3,000 lb), before the ~200 lb hitch, passengers, and bed cargo, all of which come out of the same payload number. Brochure "dry pin weight" is the empty best case; loaded trailers run heavier percentages, not lighter. The only exact pin weight comes from a scale — weigh the truck alone, then hitched with the trailer wheels off the scale, and subtract.

How to get your real pin weight (not an estimate)

Estimates plan the purchase; a CAT scale settles the argument. Three weighments:

1. Weigh the truck alone, loaded exactly as you tow (people, fuel, hitch in the bed).
2. Weigh the truck hitched, with only the truck's axles on the scale platform — trailer axles off the back of the scale.
3. Subtract. The difference is the pin weight your truck is carrying right now. While you're there, the hitched steer/drive axle readout also shows how the pin load splits across the truck's axles — compare the drive-axle number to the RAWR on the door jamb.

Sliding hitches and pin box position

Two things people hope will reduce pin weight, and mostly don't:

Sliding hitches (for short-bed trucks) move the hitch rearward for cab clearance during tight maneuvers. The pin carries the same weight — the slider changes where it sits over the rear axle, not how much there is. Budget the slider's own extra weight (they run heavier than fixed hitches) against payload too.

Pin box swaps (air-ride, Sidewinder-style) change ride quality and turning geometry, not the physics: the trailer's front weight still lands on the truck. The honest way to lower pin weight is to load the trailer differently — heavy cargo over or behind the trailer axles instead of in the front compartments — and even that moves it a point or two, not from 25% to 15%.

Why the percentage varies (and why "dry pin weight" misleads)

Floorplan sets the baseline: front kitchens, front generators, and full front closets push toward 20–25%; rear-kitchen and toy-hauler layouts (empty garage) sit lower. Then loading moves it — fresh water tanks forward of the axles, basement storage, and hitch-area cargo all add pin weight directly. Brochure dry pin weight is measured with an empty trailer and no options installed; real loaded trailers almost always carry a higher percentage than the brochure implies.
